Http://www.TrainingRetrieverPuppies.com This clips shows a couple of good techniques to use when introducing or first working your retriever pup on birds. This was filmed with snow on the ground so the picture is a bit off.
The puppy does not want to bring the bird back yet so he is on a check cord so he cannot run off.
Once he is going I begin to have him sit then mark that action with an "OK" before I throw the bird.
